Duy's review on Crazy Rich Asians:
Crazy Rich Asians is a very interesting and sarcastic movie. Its story line mentioned problems of racial discrimination, the epidemic use of social media, and the rich-poor gap in the society. At the first scene, Eleanor booked a room at an European hotel. When she came to check in, the manager request her to leave the hotel and find another place in Chinatown. They wasn't even let her borrow the phone to inform her husband about the unexpected situation. As we can tell, this is racial discrimination since white men saw Asians as stupids and treated them like inferiors.
In another scene when Rachel and Nick chatted and ate cakes, a woman took a picture of Rachel and Nick the posted it on the social media. In a few minutes, hundreds of people knew Rachel as Nick's girlfriend. They even found out Rachel's Facebook account. We can see the today's super quick effect of the viral social networks in the movie.
In one scene when Rachel visited Pek Lin house, which copied the architecture of mansions owned by super rich celebrities, she heard Peik Lin joked on her own house as an inspiration from Donald Trump's toilet.
Everything from Peik Lin's house is dramatic and shiny. Unlike her family, Nick's family was originated from the high class society. Although they were the richest family in Singapore, they lived a good life with high tastes. In the scene in which Nick's family gathered to manually make dumplings, we could see the difference between the new-money people and those of old-money. The former, commonly known as snobs, tended to make every simple things complicated and unnecessarily fancy. The latter valued long lasting traditions and never ridiculed themselves with cheap show-off actions.
If you go to cinema to watch this movie, you may find a lot more scenes of sarcasm. The movie was good and meaningful. I recommend you to check this movie out!
